Its quite simple really. Had Gareth not come, Siuan would have gone alone, and the Bloodknife would have killed her. Had Siuan not been around Gareth at that point of the battle, he would have died since she wouldn't have been able to Heal him.
But Gareth Bryne wouldn't be in this battle if Siuan didn't pressure him to stay close to her. (this is basically what Gareth Bryne himself says in the story)
Shame on you Siuan Sanche!
