Re: Solid theory. But there are some problems... fairfax Send a noteboard - 17/11/2009 04:41:57 AM
1) Obviously, according to this theory, Mesaana had to have been someone else during the coup and the initial few months of Elaida's reign. The question then is... why did she want a new persona?

I don't recall (I am old and forget things) a mention of Mesaana being in the Tower before Lord of Chaos. I thought Mesaana used the Black Ajah to get rid of Siuan and install Elaida. Then used Alviarin and Galina to get Tsutama recalled. The timeline works I think.

2) While it is true that Tsutama's personality has changed, it is also true that her memories will have to be perfect. However, Tsutama was a high profile Sitter. There are certain things she'd have done and said that would be well known to many Aes Sedai. How certain can Mesaana be that she knows all there is to know? Isn't it better to go for an obscure sister?

This is a very good question and I am not sure I have a good answer. LOC was the book that Cabriana was captured, tortured, questioned, and killed. Maybe, the same happened to Tsutsama. I would believe given the split in the Tower, Tsutsama elevated to Red Ajah Head that Tsutsama could avoid the long meetings or any meetings with sisters Tsutsama knew previously. An obscure sister could keep a low profile but an obscure sister still would be known by another obscure Aes Sedai.

I am not sure this a good answer. Anyone else please help me out here.

3) When the Hall decided to raise Egwene, they sent curt missives to the Reds, asking them to refrain from raising new Sitters. If Mesaana were Head of the Reds, she had an unparalleled opportunity to ensure Egwene was not elected, or at least was elected in a bloody manner. Yet, she complied with the Hall's orders.... why?

The Reds were very much out of favor with the rest of the Tower and not invited. Mesaana would have had a hard time stopping the election of Egwene. The Red still had 3 Sitter Duhara (Black Ajah) who was in Caemlyn, Pevera and Javrindhra were at the Black Tower and were not in the Tower to vote against Egwene. I am not sure Pevara would have voted against Egwene anyway. The rest of the Black Ajah who were Sitters had fled the Tower. The only Sitters left, the minimum necessary, all voted for Egwene. Egwene was elected on the Halls first vote. I think the Ajah Heads wanted to heal the Tower and would not put up with much dissension from the Sitters.
