The Great Hunt now as an eBook Tavi Send a noteboard - 17/11/2009 06:35:07 AM
This is a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood Tavi:

Tor has released the second book of the Wheel of Time in a variety of ebook formats. For the first time ever, The Great Hunt is now available to be read on your Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Nook, or your Sony eReader.

In keeping with the new format, a new cover has been commissioned. The new artist for this book is Kekai Kotaki. The cover is a redesign of the old Darrell K Sweet cover. It focuses on Rand in his red outfit, standing in a patch of light with his loyal retainers around him. In the background is a Trolloc patrol, watching.

I like this cover a lot better than the first one. This one makes me think of a number of things. This is really the first book where Rand gets any kind of tangible authority (and we all know how well that turns out) and now he's responsible for making not only decisions for himself, but for those that end up following him. It also evokes a feeling of the Light versus the Shadow, how Rand's hopes are all resting upon a few sets of shoulders, while the forces of darkness have infinite resources at their disposal. And honestly, it just looks better than the crap EotW cover they debuted last month. So this cover gets a thumbs up from me. If you disagree, please tear my opinion to shreds quietly.

In terms of pricing, here's how it breaks down:

Amazon Kindle ~ $7.99

I recommend being careful about buying this one early. The Eye of The World dropped to $6.99 in two weeks after the release. I expect something similar here. If you already own the dead tree version, you might as well get the cheapest electronic copy you can.

Barnes & Noble Nook ~ $9.99

I own a Kindle, and don't know anyone with a Nook, but if you're out there, this is an option for you. If you haven't decided on an e-reader, the Nook is on par with the Kindle, but B&N's price point leaves much to be desired. EotW is still at $9.99 three weeks after debut. I don't expect any price drop.

(I've done an exhaustive amount of research that I'd like to use, so if you're trying to make a holiday decision, send me a NB.)

Sony E-Reader ~ $10.50

Same advice with the Kindle version. EotW has dropped to $9.99 in three weeks since debut. That's standard price for Sony's books, so I don't expect a further price drop. 50 cents may not be much, but it adds up after a while, so take this advice as you will.

The Dragon Reborn will be released on 12/15/2009. I'll make another post about it in case people want to follow along. The link will take you to the Tor website to show the cover, along with some of the artist's sketches before the cover was finalized.
