I have seen dozens of interesting theories at Theoryland. The 'small detail' was first seen in books 4-6, but recurs thereafter. It apparantly has been mentioned enough that we will feel dumb NOT noticing it. A couple theories espoused at Theoryland are (the arguments for each are rather good if you go over there and read them):

1. Mat's hat was bespelled by Lanfear to some end.
2. Valan Luca is the reincarnation of the Luca from Rand's Rhuidean vision.
3. Using need to discover something in the Dream world. Twice that has first led to the Tower, but Elayne/Egwene redirected it outside of the Tower--is there something in the Tower?

There are other ideas if you visit that forum.
