if he is 'forced' by the pattern to open the letter before 30 days then it would have to be very serious force indeed.
Mat will do anything he can to stay in Caemlyn for 30 days... only very dire circumstances will force him out because he doesn't trust Aes Sedai. And after what Verin said about darkfriends thinking her a servant of the shadow, Mat must be very worried.
