As stated elsewhere on the boards, Mesaana could have just sworn and said "I am not Black Ajah." She's one of the forsaken, and thus never joined the black - and thus, that statement would be perfectly true while reassuring the Aes Sedai that she wasn't a darkfriend.
Graendal gave a massive clue about Mesaana's identity...
