In the meeting Bors attends, Ishy talks about slaying the great serpent (and Aiel report a similar message from Noal/Farstrider).

The whole love thing was corny, but made sense from the perspective that the golden veins of love were the only thing that Rand was unable to break away from emotionally.

There's a school of thought that says Ishy wouldn't cross the DO, but I don't believe that was ever explicitly declared to be the DO's goal until TGS.

Maybe the execution was corny, but the scene itself had to happen because empathy and Love for those close to him is the only way Rand will keep going, the only way any of us keep going, I believe.
