Because the Pattern is in a flux, as Graendal says. That's after all the reason why Moridin orders the Forsaken in KoD to sent their followers to actively search Mat and Perrin. Also the episode after PoD, when Rand went into hiding and the Shadow tried to find him for a time, showed that you still really have to search a ta'veren to find him.

It would be precisely be the point of a faked death to ensure that no Forsaken or other DF searches Rand anymore. And probably there are even fewer Forsaken left, when Rand fakes his death.
