the ancient wrong was not necessarily the collapse of the empire, but everyone that carved it up into little pieces instead of supporting one ruler "for the good of all" kinda thing.

they would have probably been fine if they showed back up and one of hawkwing's descendants was ruling all of it. but they showed up and found vast stretches emtpy "lawless" land and warring countries with the common folks suffering form the wars just like before hawkwing took over.

or maybe the ancient wrong is collaring of women
