It was named after the sound made by the savage snakesheep ... Shishka Send a noteboard - 07/01/2010 09:56:11 PM
... a vicious predator common during the AoL, but which (unfortunately) died out during the Breaking. The snakesheep was long and slithery, with a blood-red forked tongue and a thick black wool coat.

As legend has it, Elan Morin Tedronai kept one as a pet (its name was Binkie), and regularly wore it around his neck during the cold winter months. When Elan later turned to the Shadow and started developing the black specks in his eyes, the condition was mistakenly attributed to Binkie (Binkie was far from the cleanest snakesheep around, and doctors speculated that a lack of snacksheep hygiene was responsible for Ishamael's condition), and people started referring to it as the "saa", mostly just to taunt him. Ishamael wasn't too happy about that, but the name stuck, so what could he do?
Rise and fall, turn the Wheel,
'cause all life is
is really just a circle.
