The gateway is a effect of the power, it isn't OP itself. So if I made a lightning bolt with the power, and I was killed the moment I made the lightning (when it is still in the sky), it would not stop the lightning from striking the ground. Or any other thing, really.
If you recall Avihenda stopped channeling, but Rands weave still held the gateway open.
The power is used to create the gateway, but I don't think it is necessary to keep it open (at least the person who made it doesn't have to keep channeling) if you had a way of "putting a stick" in the opening, it would stay open.
