If the stick couldn't be moved, I guess the Gateway wouldn't close completely. After all, we know that the Gateway can't harm cuendillar, but that there are instances, when a Gateway can be blocked.
Which would suggest that Ashaman Narishma's Heartstone Doors would work. I wonder why they never did that in the AOL if so.
If it actually would be very practical to have such Heartstone doors to somewhere, if they can't be closed again (or it's at least rather difficult). In the AoL they had other means of transport and the most important people could anyway Travel.
