I think it would need to have a different twist, like the DO's purpose being revealed as something different than we thought.

Loony theory:
The DO was once, long long ago, a carnation of the Dragon. He lost his true love, (a forbear of Ilyena) and started messing with the Pattern to bring her back. It got so severe that the Pattern locked him out.

Now, he sits outside the Pattern with all his power, and tries to break back in so he can ressurect his love and be with her. He currently has the power to transmigrate souls, but he can't go back in time - if he became free he could reshape the pattern and reincarnate his love.
