The Aiel had not been out of the Waste in more than 2000 years... how would they know what would be needed? Even when the Aiel left with Rand they left enough to run the infrastructure in the waste and that was with EVERY clan gone from the Waste...

If four clans went, (going by the numbers in the second battle of cairhein) then they marched with a quarter million spears. That's a freagin lot. For their purposes, that should have been more than enough. Keep in mind that they didn't intend to take on every country in the wetlands. Their only goal was to kill Laman...and a quarter million spears would have been waaay more than enough to deal with anything Cairhein could throw at them.
Four clans was clearly overkill for their purposes. From what we've seen so far, Cairhein could have pulled together maybe a hundred thousand soldiers, with months of warning: warning they didn't have, in this case. Adding in the fact that Aiel are way better individually, this case was essentially a five or six to one deal in favor of the Aiel.
