If he came across a Brown with more than a touch of Green in her, he could very much have struck up a conversation with her. Especially if she was too new to the shawl to go all ageless on him. For all we know, they could have had a torrid love affair, she breaks his heart, he now doesn't like Aes Sedai.
We tend to see many of them (minus the girls) as totally boring and generally just whatever about life outside of the Tower/Tower's business. Not all of them are like that.

Moiraine told the people of Emonds Field about Eldrene and the history of Manetheren. Vanin might have found himself in such a situation i.e. getting a history lesson whether he wanted one or not.
