but clearly they are not the same dimension since Machin Shin doesn't exist in the Skimming Void, nor do Ways themselves. Seems to me that AS in the AoL made quite a study of various dimensions, such knowledge likely led to the discovery of the Ways.

Yeah, I seem to remember from tGH (IIRC) Lanfear telling Rand (before he knew who she was) that AS in the AoL studied the Portal Stones and built the Ways from the understanding they gained from that.
