In the big book 5 battle, Mat hacks his way through hordes of Aiel, while still commanding his followers to victory. He then kills Couladin.

So, he shows he is capable of dispatching several skilled fighters at once, he shows that he can do this while still maintaining his composure and control the macro battlefield, and he can take out the enemy's leader.
