hey y'all....is there anything about this series that completely irks the sh*t out of you? there is really only one thing that gets me, but it makes me fume if i dwell on it (yes, a life = needed). anyway, the whole concept of the old tongue and the modern language make me want to shake something.

over the course of 2400-2500 years, the old tongue morphs into the modern language. this is fine, despite the fact that the structure of the two languages is very different. then hawkwing sends his armies to seanchan and over 1000 years pass until present time. i know handling multiple languages is a beast for authors, but it is impossible that there is no language drift between the languages of seanchan and randland. there is no way the two languages would have drifted to the same tongue, albeit with 'accents'. it wouldn't bother me so much if rj hadn't already included the concept of language changing over time, but as it is, ergh!

anything that gets you? and i mean substantial things, not dress descriptions.


The thing that bugs me the most is all the talk from both genders saying how the other is so crazy and foolish and does everything wrong. Does nobody in Randland actually understand that men and women are DIFFERENT and that it's actually OK?? Just because our brain chemistry is completely different, very often leading to different viewpoints and opinions, it doesn't mean the one or the other is wrong. It's just different. Often, the one will see things in a light the other hadn't considered, and vice versa. I believe that was intentional. In my opinion, neither gender can get the whole picture and function at peak efficiency without the unique insights and viewpoints of the other. That's exactly why RJ describes that the most magnificent wonders from the Age of Legends involved men and women working TOGETHER, which, to me, implies they were equal partners, each contributing their different views and ways of thinking without being belittled for thinking differently.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm on a soap-box here, but I'm just amazed that any of the marriages in Randland last at all if nobody has managed to figure this out. Luckily, I managed to figure it out BEFORE getting married, and it has helped a LOT.
