he got a brief glimpse of the future, and he went crazy trying to figure out who Asmo's killer was.

Seriously, though, I'd love this as a clue. But there's a big caveat (of course): men tend to always use "he" to refer to unknown persons and animals, gods, etc. And most everybody (male and female) instinctively calls a killer "he," even when gender is unknown...
It's referred to as "masculine preferred." This politically correct "he, she or it" crap or mistaken substitution of the plural pronouns for a non-existant either-gender singular pronoun fall into the list of reasons why our current society deserves a zombie-irruption/nuclear-holocaust/imaginary-climate-change apocalypse.

Suggesting that men are more likely to do this than women merely reinforces our superior grasp of rules and standards.

The lovely thing about language is that it evolves; and, seeing as how all property, educational degrees, family inheritances, etc are not in the hands of solely men now, it is only logical that "proper" English would adapt to accommodate this. It isn't bull shit. I also find Spanish, and basically all other romantic languages, etc ridiculous for the rule, "if there is one male in a group of a million women, you will use ellos instead of ellas to refer to the collective." Completely ridiculous that we men might be hurt if our sexuality/gender/role as hunters instead of gatherers is questioned.

I completely agree that certain rules of English are definite and should never be altered, for grammatical purposes. This statement of yours is not one of them, however.
