You handled it better than most do. For some reason my house is a bird magnet. We've lived there for 5 years and I have had 3 birds fly into our freaking house and the stories are similar to this one.

I've dealt with a few birds at my parents house... they aren't easy.

Did you act all macho and turn to your wife and say "Not to worry li'l lady, all is well in seVinta Ville."

Actually, my wife was all proud of me and stuff. So, I said something awfully similar... "Of course I took care of it, I'm here to protect you."
