Keeps showing up in lists. I don't feel like googling. Tell me why it's great and what it's aboot

I'm sure jh or shrike will be better able to tell you, but I can simply say that I love science and character/story-line development, and Robinson is very good at both. I'm sure I know nothing about what colonization of Mars would really entail, but Red Mars feels like you're reading what could actually happen, and about the personalities that would really be involved. Imo, that makes it better than typical sci-fi. It's just really well done.
