The beginning was... too simple, in a way. I can't really put my finger on what it is that annoys me about it, but I feel the story got more alive the further in you got into the first book, and really shone first in the second and third book...

I can see that. Just after I made this post, I read the bit where they go through the gate and I agree. :P

I will not have time to join in the reading now, perhaps when summer comes, then I only have to work. But I feel I know much of these books by heart, at least the first four or five or so, so I might comment if you do posts.
