Care to give some spoilers? Dark Knight Send a noteboard - 18/05/2010 09:34:50 PM
(I hesitate to call this a "review", but I think it is better use this category than any of the others.)

I finished Robin Hobb's latest book, Dragon Haven yesterday.

The book is the second volume in "The Rain Wilds Chronicles" which starts with The Dragon Keeper. I found the second volume to be more revarding than the first one (which was a little boring at times). Compared with all her works, I would rate it somewere in the middle.

The story about the half-formed dragons, their Rain Wild keepers and the liveship-barge Tarman, and their quest to find the ancient Elderling city of Kelsingra continues from the first book. According to Robin Hobb's homepage, the books were written as a single volume, and then split for publication, which is noticeable. I would say that this book wraps up the story pretty well (maybe a little too neatly), but I read on Hobb's homepage that she is working on a continuation of the story.

I recommend the Rain Wilds Chronicles books to all fans of the Liveship Traders series. To avoid some minor spoilers, the reader should also read the Tawny Man Trilogy (which in its turn requires that Farseer Trilogy is read first) before the Rain Wild Chronicles.

The proper reading order is Farseer ("Assassin's Apprentice" et al), Liveship Traders ("Ship of Magic" et al), The Tawny Man ("Fool's Errand" et al), The Rain Wild Chronicles ("The Dragon Keeper" et al)
Myself I started with Liveship Traders (IMO the best series) which may be a more inviting starting point.

Robin Hobb is one of my favorite authors but for some reason I am hesitant to pick up this series. Maybe it was because of the big let-down of the Solider Son trilogy. Anyways, since she is going back to the Farseer world, was there any major revelations? Do the Dragons get cured or something? What kind of spoilers from the Farseer trilogy? Is the Fool or Fitz mentioned?
