I think the series holds up about 98% on the quality meter as you read all the books -- funny you are reading it now and commenting on the feasibility of the technology. I read the series through the 90's and have been waiting ever since for my Otherland quality VR experience!!! Hello, technological geniuses out there!!! Get cracking!

My favorite allusions are the egyptian references to do with certain characters -- but I can't tell you too much more because I don't want to put forward any spoilers.
