people tend to be torn on the subject.

I read the book despite the first chapter, because based on it I did not think it would be the type of book I would like. I went back and reread it later on, and by then the strangeness of it made sense, and there were a couple of things (like the shoe thing) I had not noticed at the time. But I am still not convinced it works as a first chapter.

Harkaway has said that he chose to do that based on instinct, and because he did not "want to begin with a story about two five-year old kids. That is not how thrillers start."

Some people like it and read the book because of it. I'd be interested to know other people's opinions on it. Both as a chapter and as an opening to the book.
