My reaction to being tricked was the complete opposite, and I always thought everyone loved that. I mean, that is pretty much the foundation for my thesis. Shit.

Dickens actually told Collins, when the latter was writing The Moonstone, I think, that the public doesn't like to be tricked. I always thought Dickens had profoundly misunderstood something. Perhaps he hadn't. I am intrigued.


I think Dickens did misread the public. For the most part, people enjoy mysteries for two reasons: 1) the possibility that they can work it out before the Big Reveal, and/or 2) the feeling of admiration for an author's skills of plotting/obfuscation when the answer is given and it is different from what the reader thought it would be. It's then fun to go back through the story to work out the clues the author gave.

Dickens' own style of writing was far removed from this. His books aren't so much about the plot, but revolve more around the characters. Mysteries depend more on plot. I think he underestimated the public's desire for thrill.

My thoughts on the "twist" will be below.
