Hahaha. He's from my home town. Did you know he used to be a singer? I had such a crush on him when I was 13.

Yup. They say he used to be a pop star in Norway in his cover blurb (and that he is a better writer than singer too!)

Much as I like the feuilleton (I'm writing my PhD on serial fiction), I am now deeply offended on behalf of Dumas.

Well, Dumas is the Master (in French anyway), but 19th feuilleton is one of the main genres that influenced Jordan for WOT. He wanted it to be an epic told in an old fashioned feuilleton style. I was told by someone in his family that he was indeed an avid reader of Dumas as a kid. I'm told the idea of Jordan to have so much side stories progressing alongside the "big historical events" of the main epic was mostly inspired by reading Dumas's mix of adventures/court dramas and "great history".

I grew up on Dumas and I still love him today, so I understand why the comparison between the two writers might be offensive to a specialist of the genre, though!

It's funny to spot scenes from Dumas Jordan has put a version of in WOT (the classic opening scene from Joseph Balsamo for instance).

I know what you mean. There are books I never take out in public.

In your field, that's even worse than in mine indeed. There's limits to what can pass as "research" in case of emergency :)
