You get to see Kvothe at his best, being the perfect hero, etc. And if that was all there was to it, it would indeed be boring. But at the same time you see the older and more mature Kvothe, who not only is no longer perfect, but seems very jaded, much weakened, and on the verge of death!

That's not number 2. If anything, Rothfuss is making fun of the concept by turning it around completely.
