the guy that Dumbledore defeated around the same year that Hitler died. He's mentioned on the chocolate frog card in book 1. Voldemort was born around 1935 I believe. (IIRC Voldemort was around 60 years old in the mid 90s/book 4).
There's one thing I never thought of before though. Dumbledore was born around 1840. Why did it take Grindewald 80 years from 1860 to come into power? It *felt* like while reading it that he started coming into power soon after he left Dumbledore. I'll have to read again to find out why it seemed that way to me.

According to Jk Rowling herself. Check out the wizard of the month section on her website
looked it up though, because i always "knew" that dumbledore was around 150 years old. found this:
Birthdate: 1881 (JKR), probably in July or August. This date supercedes Jo's statement in 2001 that Dumbledore was "about 150 years old" (Blue Nose Day) and fits better with the dates that appear in Book 7.
everything in book 7 makes more sense if we go by her most recent statement.
Edit: for more information:
this is the actual quote from 2001 and it brings up another question:
How old is Prof. Dumbledore and Prof. Snape?
JKR: Dumbledore's about 150 years old... Wizards have a longer life expectancy than us Muggles. Snape's 35 or 36
isn't everyone in the books always talking about how very old Dumbledore is? If I'm remembering that correctly, and wizards do have a longer life expectancy, then would anyone really think Dumbledore is extremely old? I mean, there are muggles who live to be that old. I always thought Dumbledore was one of the only wizards that old. I guess I just always got the impression than wizard life expectancy was a lot longer than muggle. Not a mere 10-15 years longer. But my thoughts are based on thinking Dumbledore is 150, so I suppose I always thought "wizard 150" was like "muggle 100"
