Have you read Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides? I guess it's a fair few years old now so it's possible :D Anyway, I really enjoyed it.

Or I'm always partial to a bit of Diana Gabaldon ;) I <3 the Cross Stitch series :D haha a lot of which is set near Inverness actually which is pretty north, right? :P mmm, geographically appropriate.
