I don't remember getting books assigned in elementary school either, but from middle school on my teachers gave us a mix, with maybe 2/3 of the "classics" and 1/3 contemporary stuff. I think that was a pretty good mix, but in the end, just the fact that I had to read them for school altered the experience for me.

I particularly remember reading Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls in 10th grade on my own, and thinking it was quite good. So I was excited when in the 11th grade our teacher told us we'd be studying that book next. What he didn't say was we'd be studying it for 8 months.
