Wait...I got nominated for something? Tom Send a noteboard - 27/08/2010 05:38:15 AM
Sorry, it's been a very busy week with clients in from overseas and the attendant late-night drinking followed by early morning business meetings.

I'm only going to vote for a few of these because in some of the categories I don't think I can properly vote, not having read everything.

* Best Fantasy
Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson ~ The Gathering Storm

I feel comfortable voting for it in fantasy but not overall.

* Best Non-fiction
1. Stephen T. Asma, On Monsters: An Unnatural History of Our Worst Fears
2. Umberto Eco, The Infinity of Lists/The Vertigo of Lists

I really thought the Eco book was boring but I'm not going to vote for a book expounding on Marxism by a Marxist under any circumstances. That would be like giving Castro an award for "Best Short Speech".

* Most anticipated book (as of yet unpublished)
Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson ~ A Memory of Light

* Best Book Club discussion
The Count of Monte Cristo

Hands down the best discussion of the year. I loved it.

I'm not voting for categories where I was nominated (I'm not going to actively hurt my chances of winning but I'm also not vain enough to vote for myself).
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius

Ummaka qinnassa nīk!
