iain m banks has some great names... temeraire Send a noteboard - 19/09/2010 04:52:49 PM
my favorite being the high lady sharrow (i named my dog after her). his ship names are excellent. some of them are unpronounceable too though, and leave much to be desired... but generally i love them...

grrm has some nice names, but also some annoying ones. the use of the letter q (which makes me read it as uvular stop, as in ipa) always pisses me off because i get distracted trying to pronounce the names instead of reading on :-P qhorin, qyburn, qo'horik. more like q'annoying. :P

rj's names are ok, but the intended pronunciation gets ridiculous sometimes and i just go with whatever i think it should sound like. well... i do that whenever that happens, actually.

i vaguely remember i didn't like erikson's names much. i also can't stand his writing, so i can't quote them since i only read 1/4 of gardens of the moon. (too disparate, couldn't follow the story because every time you almost understand what's happening he jumps to somewhere else entirely; i got pissed off and quit.)

pratchett and gaiman tend to have very nice names that you feel good about... they're more homey or something. :)
"it's like the real world, except there's dragons!"

cw, you are missed...
