How important are Ian Cameron Esslemont's novels in the Malazan series?

I'm planning on reading the series next spring, and I'm not sure if I need to include all of the extra novels and novellas written in the Malazan universe. Are they just bonus material? A closer look at peripheral events? Or do they directly affect the events of the main books?

Hm. I've only read one of the two yet, but...

I should have mentioned I've read the first five books of the main series.

The first one, not very. The second is vital.

I have not read Esslemont's books, and I was fine reading Reaper's Gale and Toll the Hounds.
