I should have mentioned I've read the first five books of the main series. Gher Send a noteboard - 13/10/2010 09:54:53 PM
Thanks for keeping it spoiler-free anyway .

the first one at least, Night of Knives, is not essential to the events of the main books, it's set several decades earlier and describes a crucial event often referred to Erikson's series. But you don't need to read it to understand said event, it just adds some background.

So this event is Laseen usurping the throne?

ICE's other book that's been released so far, Return of the Crimson Guard, is actually set around the same time as book seven/eight of Erikson's series, or thereabouts. I don't believe it's truly necessary to read, either, but obviously it does have a more direct relevance, and I'm told that a certain event mentioned off-hand in book eight is shown in detail in RotCG.

That's what Werthead mentioned. I'll probably read it around then.

Since you mention novella's, Erikson's novellas basically tell the story of two relatively minor characters from book three, prior to said appearance. Those are really just bonus material, not involved with the main plot of the series in any way, though I believe they show some parts of the world that aren't really shown in the series itself. Haven't read those either.

Are all the novellas about Bauchelain and Korbal Broach, then? They were entertaining characters, but I don't really care to read that much more about them. At least not until I'm done with the main series.

The first one, not very. The second is vital. - 12/10/2010 11:27:17 PM 377 Views
