Roald Dhal books are great to read aloud. Charlotte's Web. I know we read all these books aloud with him from age 4-7. He reads on his own at night now. If I remember more I will edit. :)

EDIT:
The kid chapter books he picked up at the bookstore during this time were The Magic Tree house, and The magic School bus chapter books, The Dragon in the Sock Drawer. He still rereads them from time to time.
