Frankly, I was quite shocked by the horrible writing. She never heard of lesson number one for aspiring writers, "Show don't tell".
All the twists can be seen miles away because she doesn't know how to foreshadow correctly.
And what is the deal with the botanical tour?

Canterbury Tales by Chaucer. In Ye Olde English, it's harder to translate than ancient Greek. *NM*

The Canterbury Tales are not Old English. They are Middle English.
