Granted, there's only one or two independent archaeology departments in the entire nation, so maybe anthropology departments do it differently? But yeah, I've yet to meet an archaeology professor who doesn't have a PhD, and there definitely aren't any in our archaeology department here.

The title "Lecturer" is given to people without PhDs where I go to university, but with what you said maybe that is not a widespread thing?
