Does it make you uncomfortable?
Do you wish that we did it?
Certainly not. Of course, we do do some things that I suppose some might consider the beginnings of a slippery slope in that direction, but the difference is huge if you ask me. I've heard of some cases of couples having children with certain characteristics that'd allow them to become a donor for an otherwise incurable sibling, but while I can see how that might cause psychological issues at some point down the line, they're still children who are very much wanted and treated just like the others.
The other thing is the use of stem cells, but again, really not at all like the cloning-for-organs thing.
If science ever gets around to human cloning - which does seem plausible - we will definitely run into moral problems, but I don't really see it happening that they'd be treated any different from "normal" humans. Fortunately.
If we did, how do you think we'd treat these people?
I'd like to think our societies are better than that... that we would emphatically reject the idea of using humans as, well, cattle really. Of course, if it did happen, one can see how people would start seeing them as second class citizens, and who knows where that would lead... scary thought.

I have just discovered that I loaned the book to someone recently as well.

Might as well start with this - what did you think of Ishiguro's subtle treatment of the key issue?

Are we talking the fact that they were clones?

I may not be all that good in figuring such things out, but it wasn't so evident to me at all.

I find it difficult to sympathise with these characters and I wonder whether that's deliberate.

Since Chas is making me wonder...
What did you think of the book? Like it, love it, hate it? *NM*

Crap. I hope I didn't come across as too negative, because I loved the book.

I thought of The Island, too - same premise, very different approach.

Right. A better answer, now that I've got the book and have refreshed my memory.
