C'mon, Italian isn't THAT much different from Spanish (or Portuguese)

I don't rule out reading a book in Italian at some point - I sometimes read news articles in Italian, and that works more or less, if I look up key words. But Eco uses words I don't even know in Dutch, nevermind in any other language.
And writes seriously long books. I don't think it's worth spending perhaps dozens of hours of extra time (compared to reading it in Dutch or English) while still only understanding 75% of what I read, just to be able to say I read it in Italian.

It should be said: the words you don't know in Dutch are in all probability the words you won't know in Italian either. Difficult words are difficult across language barriers. I don't think Eco would be much worse to read than someone else.

How long does it take for his books to be translated into English?

From what I can figure out by glancing at the Italian cover description, it sounds awesome.

That is what drew me in as well, besides it being a novel by Eco

But that's not to say there won't be more difficult Italian words he doesn't know.

Eco in Italian IS very difficult if you're not fluent.

Let me rephrase: I'm going to wait for a hardcover version in Italian or English.

It sounds like the French, Spanish and Italians don't read but the Germans do.

Yes, I don't think percentages are relevant. Gross statistics would matter much more.
