I suspected that too (the having sex in the first place part), but it's never actually stated or confirmed, which stands out because most things in the novel ARE made explicit at one point or another.
I did not consider it unrealistic. We are not talking about the most conservative section of Edwardian society. They are Fabians. Well, with the exception of Charles' family, but they have another reason for accepting it.
True, but still. It seems to me that Olive Wellwood must have made up for an immense educational disadvantage in a very short time...
