It's the driving force in this book, as in so many others.

Is it just me, or is that rather an overdone theme in fantasy? Does Kay do anything different with it? Do you think it's realistic that revenge can be such a big motivator for people?

Well, you need something to motivate characters. Revenge is an easy one to provide, especially when you want your character to fight Evil (which is all to common in Fantasy).

I was never convinced by the revenge theme in this book, though. It felt very half-hearted. Jehane started much too late to really be motivated by revenge. And ibn Khairan's motives seemed to be as much pragmatic as revenge-oriented.
