The guy buries his mother without tears or really any display of emotion, agrees to marry a girl he doesn't really care about, helps his neighbor beat a woman up because he doesn't really care about the morality of it, lets an old man ramble on about a missing dog because he's indifferent to the man's presence in his apartment and then kills an Arab because he's irritated from the heat and the sun.
If that's not detached I don't know what is. I will agree that it's a depressing read. I may go to Madame Bovary before reading La Peste. I liked Le Rouge et le Noir better.
