It is an interesting book with some good parts and some rather slow parts. I have been reading it to my daughter off and on and she loves some parts but finds other parts boring. It really is just a bunch of short stories about her travels in Wonderland. As and adult I wouldn't read it except to have it checked off on my list. It is fairly quick read so it is an easy check to get.
The movies really are very different and don't have the same feel or story for that matter. As for the acid trip that is up to you but the story really are not weird by today's standards.
