One of the things that makes the first series so good is the Contrast between Covenant and the beauty of the land. He isn't a bad god so much it just that because of his life in the real world he refuses accept the land as real and makes so very bad decisions as a result.
Any fantasy book they stays in print for over 30 years has something going for it. I think they should be required reading for any fan of the genre.

It's not just that there's much despair, it's also that the protagonist is an anti-hero.
