As you should know and Tim could immediately correct you, Great Britain refers to the kingdom created by the union of England (and Wales as part of England) and Scotland in accordance with the Act of Union, which Ireland was not included in. The entire holdings were therefore the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland (or, after Irish independence, of Northern Ireland only, which is the way things remain). By that measure, however, the Irish were not "British at the time".
