I, too, read the Maude translation. I remember being struck by how easy it was to read (I had seen it as a daunting book to approach because it was one of those that American television and film tended to use as a signal of intelligence -- ie. the super-intelligent person would be reading it). I also remember thinking that Tolstoy could have benefited from a stricter editor.

But on the whole I really liked it.
