I'd be interested in reading your thoughts on Children of Gebelawi or Palace Walk. Legolas Send a noteboard - 02/03/2011 07:06:37 PM
Persepolis was good. Thank you for lending it to me. But I kind of want to pick up this Mahfouz, who Legolas keeps talking about, as well.

Though I think Larry's talking more about him than I am, I'm trying to familiarize myself with a number of Arab authors, not just Mahfouz.

The two books mentioned in the title are rather different, though - Children of Gebelawi is notorious and banned in most of the Arab world for being slightly too obviously about the big three religions (it's a story about an old man living in a house with his children, the old man being God and the children representing the prophets). Palace Walk is the first book in Mahfouz' family chronicle trilogy about Egypt in the first half of the 20th century.
