The only thing I can think of is that the publisher was going to announce the date one way or the other and he wanted to do it first.

As of yet, there is nothing on his Not a Blog.


EW was supposed to hold back on it for a few more days, but they decided they needed to go with it now (possibly to do with the new exclusive trailer they got from HBO and the new GoT-subsite they are launching) and GRRM and his publishers agreed it was close enough that they could make the announcement with 100% confidence.
