I loved the first volume. What got me was the worldbuilding - the concepts and ideas of Lyra's world. The alternate world with it's different technology, society and, of course, the daemons. I read it as an adult so some part seem bit oversimplified and childish to me but then there were parts that seemed almost too drastic for an YA book.
I though the second volume was weaker then the first but maybe it's because it was set mostly in a world like ours so there was no wonderful new scenery to drag my mind away from the fact it was book for kids.
I liked the the third book better - mostly thanks to Ms Coulter and Lord Asriel's wonderful parenting methods
Lyra and Will's romance/tragedy was bit overdone but, again, YA book.
Overall I liked it and always rec it when someone asks about something to read for 10-15 YO.
